Not a good end to the week for deals.  Here’s today’s one big no-no.

Avoid:  Unless you’re eating at Oh Fish! once a week, there’s no reason to buy the Capitol Deal’s sushi punch card.  Avoid this gimmicky offer and spend that $5 on lunch somewhere else.

Well, that’s all we’ve got this week at Eat the District.  Have a great weekend, and we’ll see you on Monday!

La Forchetta

As an Italian, it’s a bit difficult to review an Italian restaurant. So many of my perceptions and opinions surrounding Italian food are inevitably wrapped up in memory and nostalgia, not driven by taste alone. No pizza will ever be better than Emilio’s around the corner; no spaghetti and meatballs will ever be better than my Dad’s on a Sunday. When it comes to these comfort foods, any restaurant has little chance of competing, which is not exactly the best mindset going into a review. But La Forchetta, a new Italian restaurant near American University, isn’t simply going for traditional comfort food.

Two great deals for you today!  Here they are:

Must-Buy:  If you’re in the Del Ray neighborhood, there’s no excuse for not taking advantage of Scoutmob’s deal at St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub.  Whether you’re stopping by for a quick breakfast of coffee and a muffin or spending an hour sipping on cappuccino and listening to their live music, St. Elmo’s is worth the trip.

Must-Buy:  We’ll be talking more about Italian food later this afternoon, but The Capitol Deal’s $40 coupon for a three-course meal for two at Chef Tony’s is a great way to get a nice dinner for two at a reasonable price.

Food Trucks

Chupacabra: Taco Monster

Chupacabra, named after a spiky Mexican monster that has a knack for sucking all the blood out of unsuspecting goat herds, is one of DC’s best and most notable taco trucks.  Now this is important for all of you food truck historians out there.  The taco truck is one of the direct ancestors of the food trucks we know and love today.  Unlike today’s fancy ethnic-fusion-mobiles, food trucks used to mostly park at construction sites and serve more simplistic dishes to a distinctly blue collar customer base.  Taco trucks were very common, again due to the simplicity of the dish and I imagine, because almost everyone can get behind tacos.

Whelp… It is pretty bleak out there today.  It appears that we only have one deal today.  And unfortunately it seems to be an

Avoid: It is hard to give a Scoutmob deal an avoid ranking but I just have to with their %50 off El Tamarindo.  A max discount of ten dollars really wont come close to covering two entrees here, most of which seem to be in the $13 area.  Also, the restaurant seems to advertise its sangria pretty heavily even though this too seems over priced.  Perhaps, this is due to it’s proximity to Adam’s Morgan.  This could be a good pregame deal, but it is only usable Sunday through Thursday, further reducing its utility.  The only shining light on the menu is their low priced papusas and tamales, but with all the good Mexican and El Salvadorian cuisine all over the city, you can probably just let this one go.

Pork Barrel BBQ

Welcome back to our 2nd of a two part piece on Pork Barrel BBQ. Yesterday you read my interview with co-owner Bill Blackburn (what? you didn’t read it? go and do that NOW), today I’m going to talk about the food.

Let’s get this out of the way: the food at Pork Barrel is phenomenal. They turn out consistently moist and tender barbecue and everything I’ve had there is delicious. When eating barbecue I tend to favor beef barbecue, and so today I’m going to talk about two of their dishes that you may not know about due to your love of pork.

Hello Tuesday. What terrible weather you’ve brought us. Luckily we have some deals to brighten your gloomy day.

Must Buy: $10 for $20 to Vince & Dominic’s Pizza (10474 Auto Park Avenue, Bethesda) from Google Offers screams Must Buy. The food here is good and cheap. Must Buy: 50% off Artfully Chocolate and Fizz Bar is right up my alley.

An Interview With Pork Barrel’s Bill Blackburn

Last week I sat down with Pork Barrel BBQ/Mango Mike’s co-owner Bill Blackburn for a wide-ranging interview on the restaurant, the DC BBQ scene, Del Ray, and some future projects. We also coaxed an exclusive tidbit out for the loyal readers of Eat the District.  Check back tomorrow for a full write up of Pork Barrel (read our thoughts here).

I know Pork Barrel really started as the sauce with Heath Hall and Brett Thompson. How did the restaurant come about?

I’ll walk you through that because it’s kind of a complicated thing.

Welcome back to the The Morning Roundup. Happy Monday all, I hope you’re staying dry out there. The weather’s looking gross today and tomorrow, so hopefully we’ll have some deals to warm you up.

Must Buy: Scoutmob has a good deal in Takoma Park today. Middle Eastern Cuisine and Market may not have the best name for a restaurant (or even close to the best name), but the food is good and relatively inexpensive for Middle Eastern food. You’re not getting a huge discount here, but the food is worth it.

Welcome to Friday. We finally made it! The weekend is upon. We got a few deals for you worth noting. If you haven’t bought your ticket for Pasties and Popcorn, do it now.

Must Buy: Scoutmob has a pretty good looking deal over at Blue Banana Sports and Rock Bar. Not a huge discount ($10), but nothing is going to be terribly expensive and the Petworth spot has a lot to offer. As always, it’s not available during happy hour. Head over to Petworth and check it out!

Fifty-Fifty: The deal is only fifty-fifty if you don’t own a grill.
