Hi, loyal Eat the District readers! Today we’ve got the first installment of The Cook’s Books, a new ETD feature where we ask DC chefs for three cookbooks they’d recommend for young home cooks, along with a recipe they’d like to highlight from one of the books. We came up with this idea when we realized that many people (including us!) have no idea where to start building a cookbook collection, and thought who better to ask than DC’s chefs! We’re kicking this off with Chef Cedric Maupillier, chef at Mintwood Place, one of DC’s hottest new restaurants (and recent dining destination of the Obamas).Read On
We’re back after a few days off. We’re still getting back in the swing of things after the move and the summer. Look for our new feature starting today! We got a few good deals to get you going after a stunning night in football.
Must Buy: Too often we get a bad Indian food deal. Today, we have a pretty good one for you. $20 for $40 from Groupon to Tandoori Nights (2800 Clarendon Blvd, Arlington). This deal will get you two entrees easy with room for an appetizer. With above average food, we’re looking at a nice deal.Read On
One fantastic deal this morning!
Must-buy: Oh man. You know how we feel about El Pollo Sabroso. Today’s Scoutmob for $5 for $10 just makes a trip to their Columbia Heights location even better. Make sure you don’t miss this one!Read On
This story is mostly a product of being in the right office at the right time. I work next door to what was for many years the Gold Crust Baking Company. In 2010, however, they moved to Maryland. The warehouse stood empty until rather recently when Swing’s Coffee signed a lease with Gold Crust (who still owns the building) and began to renovate it. If you don’t know Swings you’re missing out. Currently they have a store in Foggy Bottom at 1702 G St NW. Their existing roastery has lived in an industrial park in Alexandria for years.Read On
Welcome back to the roundup, and Happy New Year to all my friends in the tribe. We were out yesterday eating matzo ball soup and apples and honey until we couldn’t eat anymore. But we’re back and we have deal (yes I know, you read that right).
Must Buy: Who doesn’t love smoothies? They’re delicious, filling, and won’t kill you. Today’s Groupon for $5 for $10 to Jamba Juice is good to go. You have three locations to choose from with this one so wherever you are in the city should be within a not terrible distance from smoothie goodness.Read On
As I said this morning, I love delis. Italian delis, Jewish delis, if they have sandwich I’m all in. The DMV has a lot of great Italian deli options. However, where’s the pastrami? A few spots loom on the horizon (we’re looking at you DGS), but if you’re looking for your handcut Katz-esque pastrami on rye or dark rye you had been pretty much out of luck.
Hold that thought. Stachowski’s in on the scene. I’d been hearing rumors of the mighty deli located in the spot of the old Griffin Market (a place whose closing I mourned).Read On
Happy Wednesday y’all. The weather is still glorious so I hope you eat outside.
Must Buy (Foggy Bottom Only): Lunch is always a conundrum around my office. Where to eat? Am I sick of this place yet? Why do we keep going to the same three places? These are all questions that can plague you. When you get a good deal, however, it makes your decision easier. Today Google Offers brings you a deal for not one, but THREE lunch combos (sandwich, chips, drink) to Capitol Grounds Coffee (2100 Pennsylvania Ave. NW).Read On
Sorry for the slow pace of posts recently: all the moving-associated activity has left us little time to try new places and write about them! Today, we’ve got another edition of the Mailbag, and one with a subject close to Eat the District’s hearts: Sushi!
I am looking for a great sushi restaurant in DC to take my boyfriend for our six month anniversary – any suggestions? Asian fusion works too, just would like great sushi on the menu! Somewhere nice, upscale, modern, somewhere we can dress up a little, preferably close to downtown.Read On
Well hello there Monday. After yesterday’s glorious weather/football day, doesn’t going back to the grind just seem unfair? I know. I feel your pain. RG III was everything you’d hoped for, and my beloved Patriots looked like they may have found some defense. I hope you’re ready we got a lot in store.
Must Buy: I’m a big fan of Mexican food. Tacos are now all the rage. So now here comes The Capitol Deal with a tasty deal for 2 entrees and 2 margaritas for $25. The spot? Capital Hill’s own Mi Vecindad (1129 Pennsylvania Ave., SE).Read On
