The Morning Roundup 7/31/12

Two great deals today! (And one not great deal).  Get ready to jump on these; I’ve already bought the first one.

Must-Buy: Stop whatever you’re doing, grab your credit card, and get today’s Capitol Deal for dinner for 2 at La Plaza on Capitol Hill. For just $25, you get any two entrees from their menu of Mexican and Salvadoran dishes to go along with two margaritas, and of course La Plaza’s bottomless chips and salsa.  Considering the price and La Plaza’s reputation as one of DC’s best Mexican/Salvadoran restaurants, this is absolutely a must-buy.

Mailbag: Orange Line Edition

Welcome to our first edition of the Eat the District mailbag! Today I tackle two questions: one Orange Line related, and one bakery related. Please send any questions to micah@eatthedistrict.com, or just leave a comment here!

I need a place for a weeknight dinner for two that’s close to the Orange Line where I can snag a table on one night’s notice.  Interesting food is a major plus, and moderately priced (not too expensive but not a bargain bite) is ideal.  Any thoughts?

Oof. The Orange Line.

Only one deal heading your way this morning, but if you like Moroccan food, get your credit cards ready.

Must-Buy: Today’s Google Offer for $18 for $40 at Souk first stands out because of its value, at more than 50%.  Once you get  a look at the menu, you’ll be hooked.  Souk serves up some tasty Moroccan food, both in tapas-style small plates and in larger entrees.  $40 should get you enough tapas for 2, and there’s enough entrees under $20 to get full dinners as well.  Even if you and your dining companion go for the more expensive tagines, you won’t go too far over your coupon’s value.

Dangerously Delicious Pies

Dessert might just be my favorite meal (and yes, I consider dessert its own meal). The day just doesn’t feel complete without something sweet to eat at the end.  And when frozen yogurt or some cookies just won’t cut it, or when family is in town and we want to go out for dessert, I head over to H Street to Dangerously Delicious Pies.

While Dangerously Delicious Pies also serves savory pies and quiches, I come here exclusively for the sweet pies. When you only make one thing, you better do it right, and Dangerously Delicious Pies typically doesn’t disappoint.

The Morning Roundup 07/17/2012

It’s going to be over 100 degrees today, folks. Oof.  Stay inside, drink a lot of water, and make yourself feel better by grabbing one of today’s great must-buys.

Must-buy: Groupon’s deal for $25 for $50 of food and drink at Biergarten Haus is a no-brainer, getting you 50% at one of the best spots to hangout on H Street.  Snap this deal up and spend an evening in their outdoor beer garden, snacking on German-style food and choosing from their extensive beer list.

Must-buy: Today’s Scoutmob for $20 for $40 at Casa Oaxaca is a great deal for some of the most authentic Mexican food in DC.

The Morning Roundup 07/13/2012

It’s Friday the 13th, which might be why today’s deals aren’t great. Here’s what we got.

Fifty-fifty: Scoutmob’s deal for today is up to $12 off at El Gavilan. The good: El Gavilan gets great reviews and seems to be a stellar Salvadoran place. The bad: it’s all the way up in Silver Spring, and parts of the menu seem to be quite expensive, meaning $12 may not get you far.  Definite 50-50.

Avoid: LivingSocial’s deal for $25 for $50 at Againn Gastropub just isn’t enough.

Only one deal coming your way this morning.  Here’s what we’ve got.

Fifty-Fifty:  Scoutmob’s $15 off at Fez Bistro in Falls Church isn’t particularly thrilling, but it’s a fairly solid deal.  $15 off will get you close to two entrees, though you’ll almost certainly go a bit over, and reviews of the food at Fez Bistro and its sister restaurant Taste of Morocco are decent enough.  In Falls Church, it’s a bit out of the way for District residents, and make sure you check the time: the deal is only available from 8-10 pm on Monday and 6-10 pm Tuesday through Sunday.

A Cut Above

Bistro Bohem

When you think of European food, you probably think of Italy and France, or maybe Spanish tapas and British pub food.  Odds are you haven’t thought much, if at all, of the Czech Republic, a country not exactly known in America for its food.  But Bistro Bohem, which opened in March in Shaw, is quickly trying to change some attitudes in DC.  Bistro Bohem’s delicious take on Central/Eastern European food, based on the owner’s Czechoslovakian heritage, might just convince Washingtonians to turn their attention just a bit further east.

The Morning Roundup 07/05/12

Hope everyone had a great 4th! We got one good and one bad deal for you this morning.

Must Buy: DC is a city known for its good Ethiopian. Scoutmob’s deal to Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant (2434 18th St., NW) is no exception. While maybe not the top spot, it is certainly worth checking out at a discounted price. With up to $15 off you’ll get yourself a good amount of food.

Avoid: There’s no good reason to buy today’s Google Offer for Bestolli’s Pizza. Only $3 off subpar pizza is as much of an avoid as you can get.

Red Toque Cafe

Courtesy of redtoquecafe.com

Red Toque Cafe, on the corner of R and 6th Street NW, is an unassuming little restaurant; its website boasts not of a fancy new chef or a special summer menu but of their “new” (as of April 2011) awning.  Inside, though, is a charming neighborhood spot, with counter service for quick takeout or tables for sit-down dining. More importantly, they’re offering up some tasty Middle Eastern-style food. This place isn’t perfect, and the menu definitely has some misses, but there are enough hits to make this “local neighborhood kabob grill” a regular on your Bargain Bites rotation.
