Tonic: New Summer Menu Shines

Last night, the Eat The District Crew was invited to Tonic at Quigley’s Bar and Restaurant over in Foggy Bottom for the roll out of their new summer menu. This truly was an event to remember, and if you are wondering what it is you should be ordering next time you are at this GW campus hotspot, we’ve got the scoop for you. But before we get into the food, lets showcase some culinary architecture.

Upon arriving at the party we were greeted and quickly introduced to one of the most important events of the night, the kickoff of Tonic’s new #playwithyourtots campaign.

DC Ballers: Falafel and Fries F’real

It is hard to make a food truck stand out in the difficult and competitive landscape of Washington DC’s rolling eateries.  Some trucks fall through the cracks.  It is my belief that this occurs most often when a truck refuses to specialize.  The most obvious example of this is the nameless halal food truck.  If you frequent Farragut or L’Enfant’s lunch hours, you have seen these.  The all offer permutations of gyro, chicken or falafel with rice, pita, hummus and other various Mediterranean street food staples.

Hey guys, happy Thursday! You’re on your way!  We have one in each category today and of course, the winner is:

Must Buy:  A free smoothie from Juice Joint Cafe is being offered today by Scoutmob.  Clearly this is a no brainer.  Blended fruit smoothies for no money right in the middle of downtown DC.  You don’t even need to print anything out! Big thanks to Scoutmob for keeping us cool as we jump into Summer.

Fifty-Fifty: Living Social’s $15 for 30 or $25 for 50 to Petits Plats is certainly a good looking offer.

Chupacabra: Taco Monster

Chupacabra, named after a spiky Mexican monster that has a knack for sucking all the blood out of unsuspecting goat herds, is one of DC’s best and most notable taco trucks.  Now this is important for all of you food truck historians out there.  The taco truck is one of the direct ancestors of the food trucks we know and love today.  Unlike today’s fancy ethnic-fusion-mobiles, food trucks used to mostly park at construction sites and serve more simplistic dishes to a distinctly blue collar customer base.

Whelp… It is pretty bleak out there today.  It appears that we only have one deal today.  And unfortunately it seems to be an

Avoid: It is hard to give a Scoutmob deal an avoid ranking but I just have to with their %50 off El Tamarindo.  A max discount of ten dollars really wont come close to covering two entrees here, most of which seem to be in the $13 area.  Also, the restaurant seems to advertise its sangria pretty heavily even though this too seems over priced.  Perhaps, this is due to it’s proximity to Adam’s Morgan.

Morning!  Get excited.  We have a couple of really strong deals for you today folks.

Must Buy: 50% off 876 Cafe in Van Ness seems to be a homerun.  I am not super familiar with Jamaican food but rumor has it that this spot, located right at the Van Ness UDC metro, does it right.  They have a nice sized menu full of mouth watering items like jerked chicken and short ribs.  And with 50% off up to $30, you are going to be able to try several different dishes, especially if you come during lunch when they have a discounted menu.

Phillies Phamous Cheesesteak: An American Institution

“Some claim the war of American independence was won by brave patriots on the battlefield.  Others say by the pens of the great statesmen of the Continental Congress.  No friends, the war was won by the Philadelphia Cheese Steak.” -Benjamin Franklin*

And the cheesesteak has been dominating ever since.  A staple from the city of brotherly love, the cheesesteak is just what it says, a chopped steak sandwich topped with cheese.  And as the food truck fleet has long been a bastion of regional specialties transplanted into our nation’s capital (like so), it was only a matter of time before we got a cheesesteak truck.

In Praise Of

Grilled Cheese

Lets do some word association.  Grilled cheese: Delicious.  Gooey.  Diner.  Lunchtime.  Childhood.  Butter.  Sandwich.  Perfection.

I’m a sandwich man.  I like to eat things between two pieces of bread.  It allows me to eschew forks and knives, hence reducing objects within my field of vision that I am unable to eat while chowing down.  Side note: when eating, things that I cannot eat are offensive to me. Bring on the edible plates.  Anywho… I’m a sandwich man… I already said that?

Only one food deal today, as most websites have massage deals and The Capitol Deal website may be down.  But Today’s deal looks to be a good one.

Must Buy: Today Scoutmob is offering half off at Zabb Modern Asian with a twenty dollar max discount.  Any time Scoutmob puts up a sushi restaurant I am tempted to give it a go.  There is nothing quite so wonderful as $40 of sushi for only $20.  This Dupont restaurant is mostly known as an overflow happy hour hotspot from Mexican pre-game party factory Lauriol Plaza.

A limited selection of some okay deals here on May 1st.  Though all of these would be great if you lived in Southern Maryland.  Maybe it will take a bit for the month to ramp up.  Fingers Crossed.

Fifty-Fifty: I will definitely be getting this deal for %50 off of Tanad Thai up to $20 in Tenleytown.  This is because I live in Tenleytown.  For the rest if you, its standard scoutmob.  Get it if you are nearby or love Thai.  This new restaurant’s previous iteration, 4912 Thai was something of a Thai food staple for those who frequent the no mans land between Tenleytown and Friendship Heights.
