The Morning Roundup 1/07/2013

AND WE’RE BACK! We’ve heard your cries and our New Years Resolution is to get back to blogging. I know you’ve heard this from us before, but we have a plan and we’re back in business. Expect the Morning Roundup Monday-Friday and new features Tuesday-Thursday. This will keep us fresh and keep you entertained. We missed you all very much and we got a lot to talk about. For now let’s hit the roundup.

Must Buy: I’m going to break my rule about posting old deals. Because we’ve been off for so long I need to give you something special.

Finally a few good deals. They aren’t the best I’ve seen, but good enough for a Tuesday.

Must Buy: While Sette Osteria (1666 Connecticut Ave., NW) may not be the best place in the city for brunch, today’s Capitol Deal is great. $16 gets you an entree and bottomless Mimosas, Bellinis, or coffee (don’t choose coffee). I’m a fan of bottomless drinking in all it’s forms, so throw in some food and you’re going to have one happy camper. This is a solid deal for a lazy Sunday.

The Morning Round 10/15/2012

We’re back from a brief hiatus, and we know you’ve missed us. We’ve hit mid-October and wow the weather is nice. Knock on wood. Let’s take a look.

Avoid: I wish we could have returned with something better for, but unfortunately you’ll have to wait until at least tomorrow. As we said in August you’re going to be able to do better than today’s LivingSocial to Mehak Indian Cuisine (817 7th St., NW). Give this one the pass, and find yourself something more tasty down Chinatown way.

Lot’s to see here on this Wednesday. We got quite a few deals of all different qualities.

Must Buy: We like pizza. We like beer. Today’s Capitol Deal gives us both. $12 gets you a personal pizza and two beers at Pizza No. 17 (1523 17th St., NW). Even if the pizza isn’t the best in the city (it’s pretty good), this deal is made on the two beers. You can use multiple vouchers at one time so grab your friends and head on over.

Must Buy: When we lived in Tenleytown for a while our go-to for trivia was Union Jack’s in Bethesda (4915 Saint Elmo Ave., Bethesda).

Rabbit Rabbit and happy October! It’s a new month and fall is here. The Patriots cruised yesterday, so in return we got you a good deal to start off October right.

Must Buy: Living in the Upper NW (Tenleytown) for a year there were few places I didn’t try. Probably the one I didn’t get to that’s still pretty high on my list is also the recipient of today’s Scoutmob. Blue 44 Restaurant and Bar (5507 Connecticut Ave., NW) always held my appeal, but for some reason I never got around to it.

Happy Tuesday. For myself and my Jewish friends today isn’t a day to think about food. But I’m happy to share the deals with you despite my empty stomach.

Must Buy: Yes. Yes. Yes. We’ve spoken on the merits of Kushi (465 K St., NW) before, and today’s LivingSocial deal won’t disappoint. $25 will either get you a tasting menu for one (with sake) or $25 for $50 for the table. I recommend grabbing a few of these and heading down with some friends and making a night of it.

Fifty-Fifty: I’m not overwhelmed by today’s The Capitol Deal to Lavandou (3321 Connecticut Ave., NW).

The Cook's Books

The Cook’s Books: Chef Cedric Maupillier, Mintwood Place

Hi, loyal Eat the District readers! Today we’ve got the first installment of The Cook’s Books, a new ETD feature where we ask DC chefs for three cookbooks they’d recommend for young home cooks, along with a recipe they’d like to highlight from one of the books. We came up with this idea when we realized that many people (including us!) have no idea where to start building a cookbook collection, and thought who better to ask than DC’s chefs! We’re kicking this off with Chef Cedric Maupillier, chef at Mintwood Place, one of DC’s hottest new restaurants (and recent dining destination of the Obamas).

We’re back after a few days off. We’re still getting back in the swing of things after the move and the summer. Look for our new feature starting today! We got a few good deals to get you going after a stunning night in football.

Must Buy: Too often we get a bad Indian food deal. Today, we have a pretty good one for you. $20 for $40 from Groupon to Tandoori Nights (2800 Clarendon Blvd, Arlington). This deal will get you two entrees easy with room for an appetizer. With above average food, we’re looking at a nice deal.

One fantastic deal this morning!

Must-buy: Oh man. You know how we feel about El Pollo Sabroso. Today’s Scoutmob for $5 for $10 just makes a trip to their Columbia Heights location even better. Make sure you don’t miss this one!

Swing’s Is Coming

This story is mostly a product of being in the right office at the right time. I work next door to what was for many years the Gold Crust Baking Company. In 2010, however, they moved to Maryland. The warehouse stood empty until rather recently when Swing’s Coffee signed a lease with Gold Crust (who still owns the building) and began to renovate it. If you don’t know Swings you’re missing out. Currently they have a store in Foggy Bottom at 1702 G St NW. Their existing roastery has lived in an industrial park in Alexandria for years.
