Chicken Out

When it comes to good, quick takeout food, we here at Eat the District love a good piece of roast chicken, especially when it’s cheap. There are many chicken places in the city (Evan already went to El Pollo Sabroso and loved it), and we’ll probably get to a bunch more before we’re all said and done here. That being said, not all of these places are created equal. Roast chicken, while a pretty simple dish, can easily end up dry and tasteless in the wrong hands. There’s no worries about that when you eat at Chicken Out.

One deal for each category today! Here’s what we got.

Must-Buy: Google Offers’ $10 for $20 at SUNdeVICH in Shaw makes lunch for two easy. SUNdeVICH’s menu of globally inspired sandwiches ranges from $9 to $12 a sandwich, so two of them won’t cost you much more than your coupon’s value.  Even better, you know you’re getting quality food for your dollars: SUNdeVICH gets its bread from local bakeries and tries to source its ingredients locally whenever possible.  Pick this deal up!

Food Trucks

Trucko de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo offered a maelstrom of events this year. From celebrating the holiday to the Kentucky Derby to the Mayweather/Cotto fight and a lot of good playoff sports, Eat the District had to choose how we wanted to spend our Saturday. Curbside Cookoff’s Trucko de Mayo featuring 45 food trucks down at RFk was a no brainer. Here was a chance to sample a lot of different trucks and take in the fun vibe on a beautiful Saturday. It wasn’t overly crowded when Even and Micah went (around lunch time) and the lines moved quickly.

We’re back from a lovely weekend and there are deals to be had. I’m hoping that this will be the week May turns the corner from pretty good deals to great deals. On to the Roundup!

Must Buy: We’ve shunned a few brunch deals in the past, which as a lover of brunch has made me sad. LivingSocial finally delivers the goods this morning with a fantastic $30 for $60 to Policy. This deal is good for two entrees, a seasonal bread basket, and bottomless Mimosas OR bottomless Bloody Marys. The drinks normally cost $18/each so basically this deal gets you brunch and free unlimited drinks.

OMG Free Ben and Jerry’s

I love the Greek Yogurt fad. I’m not entirely sure I buy it, but I enjoy Chobani’s Blood Orange flavor more than anything. I vaguely understand it has something to do with probiotics, which are good for you and aid in digestion. Sure, whatever. I also love Frozen Yogurt. In fact I would say I like it more than ice cream (gasp!). So the marriage of the two must be the best thing ever right?

You’re not wrong. Ben and Jerry’s recently unveiled their entry into this new wild world of Greek Frozen Yogurt.

FRIDAY!  And to celebrate, Livingsocial has a fantastic deal for you.

Must-buy:  Livingsocial’s $15 for $30 at H Street’s Sticky Rice is as close to a no-brainer as they come.  This popular spot serves up delicious Asian fusion food, from innovative sushi rolls to a variety of noodle dishes, none of which disappoint.  Even better, the portion sizes are huge:  two appetizers and one entree are easily enough food for two people, making the $30 easily enough for you and a friend.  Don’t miss this one.

Market 2 Market

Most neighborhoods or towns have a go-to deli. It’s a place where one can reliably get a sandwich, and the DMV has a lot of thes elocal spots where you can grab a pretty good sub. DC does not have a lot of good Jewish delis, but that’s a different story for a different post. What the DC area does have is a lot of good Italian delis. From A. Litteri to the Italian Store, we got your pork cold cut varietals well covered. Enter Market 2 Market, Del Ray’s entry into the Italian deli fray (and the most successful “blank 2 blank” since Jungle 2 Jungle).

Good morning! We’re pretty exhausted after that 3 OT game last night, but the deals wait for no man!  Here’s what we’ve got this morning.

[Update] Fifty-Fifty: Groupon surprised us with a late addition with this $20 for $40 to Burapa Thai. The name is funny (sounds like a burp), but the deal is less so. The food is so-so and the bang for your buck is also so-so. Sounds like a fifty-fifty if I ever heard one. If you love Clarendon, though, then this is your kind of deal.

Fifty-fifty:  Our thoughts on today’s Scoutmob deal for Senbeb Vegan Cafe are pretty obvious.

In Praise Of

Grilled Cheese

Lets do some word association.  Grilled cheese: Delicious.  Gooey.  Diner.  Lunchtime.  Childhood.  Butter.  Sandwich.  Perfection.

I’m a sandwich man.  I like to eat things between two pieces of bread.  It allows me to eschew forks and knives, hence reducing objects within my field of vision that I am unable to eat while chowing down.  Side note: when eating, things that I cannot eat are offensive to me. Bring on the edible plates.  Anywho… I’m a sandwich man… I already said that?

Only one food deal today, as most websites have massage deals and The Capitol Deal website may be down.  But Today’s deal looks to be a good one.

Must Buy: Today Scoutmob is offering half off at Zabb Modern Asian with a twenty dollar max discount.  Any time Scoutmob puts up a sushi restaurant I am tempted to give it a go.  There is nothing quite so wonderful as $40 of sushi for only $20.  This Dupont restaurant is mostly known as an overflow happy hour hotspot from Mexican pre-game party factory Lauriol Plaza.
