Tacos El Chilango

You’ve already read my review of El Chilango the food truck (if you haven’t read it here). About a month ago it was announced that they would be opening a store on V Street. And then it was announced that it would open my birthday week. And then I found out I was moving 5 blocks away. So consider me excited when I checked it out last week. Would it live up to the truck? Would there be more menu options? Would there be habanero slaw. The answer to all these questions is an emphatic yes.

A heaping plate of goodness

Tacos El Chilango the store lives up to the hype. The tacos are still amazing and there’s a slew of new features. The first is a benefit for both staff and customer, air conditioning. In the summer I’ve waited outside in the blistering heat for those yummy tacos, so it’s a nice relief to be able to take a seat inside and enjoy my tacos in the cool air. The next big addition is the expanded menu. Adding three vegetarian options and made to order guacamole (from a family recipe), I couldn’t even get it when I went last because the avocados were deemed to be not ripe enough. I respect that decision more than I was disappointed in missing out. The honest and friendliness is important to the El Chilango family of restaurants. Rather than serve me substandard guar and take my money, they pride themselves on the product.

A huge new addition is the salsa bar. If you eat at the restaurant you get access to unlimited red and green salsa AND unlimited habanero slaw. I burnt my mouth badly and was racing for the Jarritos.

One thing you’ll notice is that there has been a price increase from $2 to between $2.25 and $2.50. This is an easy price to pay for amazing tacos conveniently located in the city. Mixto still rules supreme, but try out some of the new options that you can only get in the brick and mortar location. Their hours are going a bit different. While the truck focuses on the lunch crowd, the store will be open for those seeking a cheap dinner. So run, don’t walk to V Street and snack on some tasty tacos.
