Check it Out: Free Georgetown Cupcakes
We here at Eat the District live by only one maxim in life: the only thing better than eating for cheap is eating for free. We are known scavengers, seeking out every complementary drink we can find and asking our friends if they’re REALLY going eat those leftovers because maybe we should just take them instead. We. Love. Free. Food.
Which is why our ears perked up when we first learned of Georgetown Cupcake’s daily cupcake giveaway. Every morning – yes, EVERY SINGLE MORNING – Georgetown Cupcake tweets and posts on Facebook the secret flavor of the day.
The Morning Roundup
The Morning Roundup 4/09/2012
Happy Monday everyone. Hope you had a fantastic Easter and that you pigged out on candy and most importantly Peeps. I hope you all watched this because it’s my favorite thing ever. And now on to the deals (there weren’t a ton of food options today, but we’ll make do)!
Must Buy: Have I told you how much I love Scoutmob. It’s true. I think they have the best business model (no need to buy in advance) and often offer the best deals at better restaurants. I don’t how the back end works for the businesses, but for the customer it’s a great experience.

Happy Saturday everyone. What you thought we wouldn’t hit you with the roundup on the weekend? Well here we are and we got deals for you. The weekend morning roundups may skew toward early afternoon roundups, but we’ll be bringing the freshest deals your way every weekend morning.
Must Buy/Fifty-Fifty: Groupon’s offering a $49 meal for two to The Wild Orchid Cafe. Four courses for $49. Now why isn’t this solely a must buy? The only reason is because it’s not the district (which is the point of this blog).

In Praise Of
Grilling The Turkey
Welcome to the first installment of “In Praise Of.” Here I will discuss some of my odder food fascinations/obsessions. Today I will tell you all about my love of grilled turkey.
One of the things I most looked forward to upon my arrival in the cityburbs was buying a proper charcoal grill. I will assert this as fact and not opinion: meats, fish, vegetables all taste better when cooked over a charcoal fire. I’ve had steaks on a gas grill and steaks on a charcoal grill, and I can tell you that there is no comparison.

The Morning Roundup Good Friday/Passover Edition
Good morning everyone. I hope you had fantastic opening day. I feasted on some delicious barbecue and watched the Reds cruise to victory so it was quite a day.
Let’s get to the deals.
Must Buy: Scoutmob’s got the deal of the day. 50% off at LeoNora Bakery in Clarendon may not be the most money you can save today, but the quality likely can’t be beat. Maybe it’s just me gearing up for Passover, but really good freshly baked baguettes are always a treat. LeoNora’s signature baguette is infused with bacon and gruyere, which is an unbeatable combo.

The Morning Roundup 04/05/2012
Good morning! Here’s today’s Morning Roundup:
Must Buy: This deal actually went live yesterday afternoon (and we tweeted it over at @eatthedistrict), but Google Offers’ $5 for $10 at Starbucks deal is too much of a no-brainer not to include. Plus, for every deal purchased Starbucks donates $3 to the Create Jobs for USA fund, so you can pretend you’re buying this for charity and not just because you’re mildly addicted to their grande nonfat double shot caramel macchiato.

Food Trucks
Food Truck 101: An Introduction
Food Trucks are like people. Some folks love them, some folks don’t. They come in all sizes and shapes and colors. Some smell bad. Some smell unbelievable. Some are so attractive that when they go by, they slow down traffic, while some food trucks fly under the radar, seemingly uncaring about trendy fashion and flashy gimmicks, only to shock us with the goodness that is inside. But perhaps the most important similarity between food trucks and people is that, in the DMV anyways, their population seems to be growing at an alarming rate.

The Morning Roundup
Welcome to The Morning Roundup
Good morning readers. Welcome to our first ever morning roundup. Evan explained it to you yesterday in his introductory post, but I’ll repeat for those of you that didn’t read it (shame on you!) or need a refresher. Every morning we’re going to attempt to make sense of the all the daily deals that flood your inbox. The notable deals (we won’t flood you with every single food deal on offer) will be labelled with Must-Buy, Fifty-Fifty, and Avoid. The sites we’ll focus on (because we have to draw the line somewhere) are: LivingSocial, Groupon, Scoutmob, Google Offers, and The Capitol Deal.

A Sincere Thank You
At the end of our first day we wanted to offer a sincere thanks to all of you. The overwhelming amount of support we received today was truly humbling. It makes what we’re doing worth it. Someone that was recognized this morning that deserves another special thanks is Jordan Sheckman, who brought our vision to life. We have a fantastic home for this site and it’s only going to continue to grow.
We’re out celebrating at La Forchetta (more on that at a later date), but we couldn’t end our first day without giving thanks.
