The Morning Roundup 07/05/12

Hope everyone had a great 4th! We got one good and one bad deal for you this morning.

Must Buy: DC is a city known for its good Ethiopian. Scoutmob’s deal to Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant (2434 18th St., NW) is no exception. While maybe not the top spot, it is certainly worth checking out at a discounted price. With up to $15 off you’ll get yourself a good amount of food.

Avoid: There’s no good reason to buy today’s Google Offer for Bestolli’s Pizza. Only $3 off subpar pizza is as much of an avoid as you can get.

The Morning Roundup: 7/3/2012

Fifty-Fifty: $15 for $30 to Yves Bistro in Alexandria from LivingSocial is a classic lunch fifty-fifty.  While going in the evening will run you between $20 and $30 per entree, during lunch almost all of their menu items are under $10.  But the lunch menu is build with a good number of options from burgers and sandwiches to pastas and pizzas.  Again, a great lunch deal, when night begins to fall… steer clear.

Looks to me that all the other deal sites have decided to take the 3rd for the 4th.  I’ll be keeping my eyes open to see if anything pops up, but as it stands, its just the one.

A Cut Above

Pasta Mia

I’ve lived in DC now for about six years. In that time there have been a lot of good restaurants. I’ve discovered a few gems and eaten at some of the classics. But I have not eaten at ALL of the best restaurants in the city. As a college student for four of those years, that was a practical impossibility. But there have always been a few restaurants that have been on peoples’ must try list. Most of those I have crossed off. You have read about many of them here. But one that had eluded me, until today, was Adams Morgan’s Pasta Mia.

Happy Monday everyone. I hope that you survived the storm, and have power. The men of Eat the District are powerless, but that doesn’t stop the deals.

Must Buy: There are a lot of places that bill themselves as Modern Asian or Asian Fusion and a lot can’t pull it off. Many are pretty good and some are very good. Today’s Scoutmob falls somewhere in between pretty and very good. 50% off to Zabb Modern Asian (1836 18th St., NW) offers you up to $20. This will get you a really good amount of food for a low price.

Congratulations! You’re almost there. It’s almost 5pm on Friday, and you’ll be able to escape the office and head home. Hopefully you won’t melt today, as it looks to be another scorcher. To the deals!

Must Buy: Today’s Scoutmob is a little confusing. 50% off to Gesté Wine and Food (4801 Edgemoor Ln, Bethesda) implies you can get wine with your deal. You can’t. With a max discount of up to $10 you can get a lot of really tasty food, but no alcohol. Despite this lack of wine, this deal is a must buy.

Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips and Bulgogi

In the Ledroit Park neighborhood — on the border with Shaw — on Florida Ave, you find a curious site. Sitting at 400 Florida NW is an Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips. Now this in and of itself wouldn’t be that curious. There are roughly 45 Arthur Treacher’s in the United States, but this is the only of its kind. Why? Well a sign on the exterior this Arthur Treacher’s proclaims $6.99 for Bulgogi and Rice. This isn’t an uncommon trend. A number of Korean owned restaurants have branched out from their traditional roots and added bulgogi or bibimbap (King Street Cafe, which will appear here later is one such restaurant).

Everyone! It’s almost the weekend! Hurray. Now onto the deals before it gets too hot out.

Must Buy: French restaurants in DC often tend to be really expensive (see any of Michel Richard’s restaurants), or inexpensive and mediocre. Bistro la Bonne (1340 U St. NW) is neither. It’s inexpensive and awesome. That’s why this $20 for $40 is amazing. I recently was there for a birthday brunch and you’re going to eat well with this deal. Bloody Marys, Mimosas, and Bellinis ran $3/each.

Red Toque Cafe

Courtesy of redtoquecafe.com

Red Toque Cafe, on the corner of R and 6th Street NW, is an unassuming little restaurant; its website boasts not of a fancy new chef or a special summer menu but of their “new” (as of April 2011) awning.  Inside, though, is a charming neighborhood spot, with counter service for quick takeout or tables for sit-down dining. More importantly, they’re offering up some tasty Middle Eastern-style food. This place isn’t perfect, and the menu definitely has some misses, but there are enough hits to make this “local neighborhood kabob grill” a regular on your Bargain Bites rotation.

Happy hump day!  You are almost there!  Here are the deals!

Fifty-Fifty: $15 for $30 over at Layalina in Arlington from scoutmob is an okay deal.  Boasting an extensive menu, Layalina heavily features it’s Lebanese and Syrian roots.  Unfortunately, the menu, with it’s plethora of spiced meat as well as hummus and vegetarian options is pretty expensive.  Most of the entrees sit just under $20 meaning your coupon wont do all that much.  Also, it is a bit of a ways outside the city.

Wassub: Fun with Fusion

Usually when you hear talk of a fusion reaction, it is during a discussion about binding nuclei and the quest for a sustainable energy source.  Well, the fusion reaction I had upon biting into one of Wassub’s delicious fusion sandwiches was a reaction of a different kind.  The party in my mouth kind.  The “why is my co-worker quietly moaning into that sandwich” kind.  Fusion is a relatively common theme running through the food truck community.  This is a good thing.  It allows for more variation and promotes culinary exploration.
