The Morning Roundup 6/11/2012

Welcome back to Monday and welcome to the June 11th edition of The Morning Roundup. We have some absolutely fantastic deals to get your week started off the right way. Let’s get the ball rolling.

Must Buy: Normally we’re wary of all you drink/all you can eat deals here at Eat the District. Yes they’re inexpensive, but we don’t like to settle for the cheap deal just because it’s cheap. Today’s Capitol Deal for Bottomless Drinks and a dinner entree for $25. Now let’s be clear, you aren’t getting top of the line alcohol.

One great option and then a couple of deals for the section of Washington society that actually likes things in Georgetown.

Must Buy: Scoutmob’s %50 off up to $20 to Ma-Ma’s Southern Cuisine appears to be a home run.  Serving up generous portions of Fried Chicken and sauteed fish along with delicious southern homestyle sides, this C-heights/Petworth eatery is very highly regarded for its comfortable ‘make yourself at home’ atmosphere and its cuisine.  If you find yourself over there, this family run restaurant should be one of your first stops.

El Chilango: The Real Deal

For today’s post I decide that it was time I get out and hit the streets. I couldn’t let Steve have all the fun with our rolling kitchens. There are so many great ones out there. So many big names. Today I want to tell you about the one you haven’t heard of and why it might be the best one there is. In a city where food trucks have exploded, where every cuisine has a truck and every truck has a witty name, El Chilango is sticking to the important stuff, namely, cranking out insane food.

El Chilango isn’t a pretty truck.

Only two for you today, and only one has some legs, here goes!

Fifty-Fifty:  Scoutmob’s 50% off up to $10 at Paciugo Gelato & Caffe is only barely a 50/50 and only due to it’s location.  Located a block or so from the Clarendon metro, I am sympathetic to those who are less willing to make the trip.  But if you want in, this is a nice date deal.  Scoutmob is gonna get you two yummy Gelatos for the price of one and this new gelateria has got the flavor hook up.  The one that looks most interesting to me is the Pannacotta but they change every day to keep you intrigued.

In Praise Of

Chunk Light Tuna Fish

From a very young age I’ve been a fan of tuna fish. I admit that’s a strange thing to say, but it’s true. For a whole year as a child I ate tuna fish sandwiches. For over 20 years tuna has played a big part of my life. And of course because it’s me I can’t just eat any tuna. I have to make things difficult.

The two major types of canned tuna are albacore and chunk light. While Albacore is an actually type of fish, chunk light is more of a grab bag of non-white tuna. A lot of it will come from Skipjack, another species in the tuna family, but it’s not as specific as albacore.

The Morning Roundup 6/6/2012

I was hoping for some good must-buys today for my birthday, but unfortunately we’re stuck with a round of middling deals.  Here’s the roundup.

Fifty-Fifty: Today’s LivingSocial for a $77 three-course sushi meal for two at Fujimar is actually pretty tempting.  Fujimar’s mix of Latin and Asian cuisine makes for an exciting menu, and $77 for three courses and a round of cocktails is not a bad price.  At the end of the day, it’s a little too expensive for us to whole-heartedly endorse, but if you’ve got an occasion coming up and you’re looking for a nice night out, I say pick this deal up today.

A Cut Above

The Liberty Tree

There are some restaurants you go to in order to be surprised, to taste exotic dishes or strange combinations or old favorites re-imagined in ways you never thought possible.  And then there are restaurants you go to when you want to feel at home, to sit in a comfortable setting and eat the foods you’re accustomed to, maybe with a slight change or a bit of flair, but never straying too far from the original.  The Liberty Tree is decidedly the latter and all the better for it.

A small restaurant on H Street NE, you could easily walk right by if you weren’t looking for it.

Woke up to some lovely weather (this is June?) and some great deals. I’m really excited for some of these.

Must Buys: LivingSocial has a pair of deals that I’m a big fan of this morning. Both are event deals at their 918 F St home. The first is a beer tasting curated by local beer aficionado Greg Engert. $39 gets you a trip around the world and through time. You’ll learn (and drink) a lot. They also have some tasty appetizers on deck. The second event is just for me bro’s out there. A cooking class just for the guys.

Flying Fish: Pleasantly Confused

A sushi bistro speakeasy? Who is that bartender in suspenders and a bow tie hanging near the sushi chefs?  Is that Karaoke I hear starting.  These are just some of the questions you will have upon your arrival at Flying Fish in Alexandria.  This place is confusing.  Perhaps you would say that it is ‘confused’, that this restaurant isn’t quite sure what it wants to be.  It throws your mind into a bit of a jumble.  The dissonance of restaurant genre is disconcerting.  But after my visit, I walked out thinking mostly, that I had just had some of the most interesting maki rolls that I have ever tried.

Welcome back. I hope you had a fantastic weekend! Did you relax by the pool? Did you have a BBQ? I hope you had fun. We’re back with one deal this morning, but we like it a lot.

Must Buy: Scoutmob has a deal for you today to recently opened Columbia Heights eatery The Pinch (3548 14th St., NW). %50 off up to $12 will get you some tasty fare. The Pulled Duck Breast BBQ Sandwich sounds amazing, so you might want to try that out. Now don’t go on the weekend because this deal is only valid Sunday-Thursday. But you have to eat on those days to, so head over to Columbia Heights and enjoy something good.
