DC Ballers: Falafel and Fries F’real

It is hard to make a food truck stand out in the difficult and competitive landscape of Washington DC’s rolling eateries.  Some trucks fall through the cracks.  It is my belief that this occurs most often when a truck refuses to specialize.  The most obvious example of this is the nameless halal food truck.  If you frequent Farragut or L’Enfant’s lunch hours, you have seen these.  The all offer permutations of gyro, chicken or falafel with rice, pita, hummus and other various Mediterranean street food staples.

The Morning Roundup: 5/24/2012

Hey guys, happy Thursday! You’re on your way!  We have one in each category today and of course, the winner is:

Must Buy:  A free smoothie from Juice Joint Cafe is being offered today by Scoutmob.  Clearly this is a no brainer.  Blended fruit smoothies for no money right in the middle of downtown DC.  You don’t even need to print anything out! Big thanks to Scoutmob for keeping us cool as we jump into Summer.

Fifty-Fifty: Living Social’s $15 for 30 or $25 for 50 to Petits Plats is certainly a good looking offer.

Great GoogaMooga

This past weekend, the food world was buzzing about GoogaMooga, the food and music festival held in Brooklyn and featuring both food and talks by celebrity chefs.  Our good friend and Brooklynite Matt Berk attended and gives us all the details about what he ate and drank, as well as some tips for any DC people who might want to make the trip to New York for next year’s festival!

This past weekend 40,000 people showed up to The Great GoogaMooga in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Googa-what? GoogaMooga is a self described “amusement park of food and drink,” a place where people wait in line for a lobster roll about as long as they would for Space Mountain.

Good morning! Here are your deals for the day:

Must-Buy:  RFD in Chinatown is already a great spot to grab a burger for lunch or a drink and some delicious pretzels with a friend, and today’s Groupon deal makes it that much better.  The deal doesn’t allow you to get dinner, but that’s really not what RFD is for.  We say don’t miss this one.

Must-Buy:  This isn’t a food deal, but today’s Scoutmob for Rocket Bar is a great chance to save some money at one of the more fun bars in DC.

Chef Geoff’s (Tysons Corner)

This past weekend we welcomed GW’s class of 2012 (and Georgetown’s) to the ranks of the college graduates. With this time comes the traditional celebratory dinner. I was honored to attend the dinner of known eater Sarah Orton. The restaurant of choice, Chef Geoff’s in Tyson’s Corner. With outposts in Friendship Heights and downtown DC, the Tysons Corner location is a more subdued affair (though not in our room, things were certainly rowdy). The menu was hand selected by the graduate herself and boy did she make some good choices (all on the actual menu, so you too can recreate this meal).

Welcome back. You survived Monday, give yourself a pat on the back. The weather is looking pretty gross once again. The deals? A little better.

Must Buy: Scoutmob’s 50% at RedRocks Pizzeria (1036 Park Rd., NW) is a typical no brainer from Scoutmob. Good food, not overly expensive, and no committment to buy make the Columbia Heights spot a slam dunk. Good pizza with a good beer selection sounds like a recipe for a great night out. The food is a little pricey, and you’re only getting $12 off but we still say yeah to this one.

Half-price Tapas at Heritage India’s Happy Hour

Heritage India, a pretty swanky looking restaurant with one location just south of Dupont Circle and a second a few blocks north of Georgetown, is not a place you’d expect to find cheap food.  A quick look at the menu confirms this: chicken tikka masala will run you $16, lamb vindaloo costs $18.  But on my visit to Heritage India last Friday, dinner for three cost about $30, or just $10 a person.  The secret–just like for sushi– is to go during happy hour.

Welcome back to the week everyone. I hope you had a relaxing food filled weekend. Congrats to all the new GW and Georgetown grads. I know many of you may now be officially unemployed, but there’s good news, we have deals for you! Take advantage of these more than ever because it sure beats eating ramen everyday. On to the deals!

Must Buy: This may be the best deal we’ve ever featured. LivingSocial is offering $30 for $60 to Kushi (465 K Street NW). If you haven’t already bought it, stop reading and go do so.

Not a good end to the week for deals.  Here’s today’s one big no-no.

Avoid:  Unless you’re eating at Oh Fish! once a week, there’s no reason to buy the Capitol Deal’s sushi punch card.  Avoid this gimmicky offer and spend that $5 on lunch somewhere else.

Well, that’s all we’ve got this week at Eat the District.  Have a great weekend, and we’ll see you on Monday!

Al Dente (formerly La Forchetta)

Al Dente, formerly known as La Forchetta, changed its name due to similarities with other restaurants both in DC and worldwide. Still the same menu, still the same chef, still the same review!

As an Italian, it’s a bit difficult to review an Italian restaurant. So many of my perceptions and opinions surrounding Italian food are inevitably wrapped up in memory and nostalgia, not driven by taste alone. No pizza will ever be better than Emilio’s around the corner; no spaghetti and meatballs will ever be better than my Dad’s on a Sunday.
