Curley’s Q: Smoke ‘Em If You Got ‘Em.

The general consensus is that in order to get great BBQ, one must head south.  Unfortunately, the great strongholds of American BBQ: Texas, Memphis, Kansas City, are something of a road trip away.  Fortunately for us, the conventional wisdom does not necessarily apply here in the district.  See, I have experienced some truly delicious Q by looking North.  North to Montgomery County that is.

Curley’s Q is a relatively new BBQ truck based outside of DC, in Montgomery County.  Started by the truck’s namesake David ‘Curley’ Cornblatt less than two months ago, this bright yellow number serves up copious amounts of hardwood smoked meat.

The Morning Roundup 4/25/2012

A pretty weak week for deals. We do have one that’s worth checking out and one to give a pass to. I’m hoping we roll into Thursday and Friday with some gems, but alas we don’t control the deals, only report on them.

Must Buy: If we were doing a tally (and we’re not, though maybe we should be) Scoutmob would be the leader for best deals. Today is no different. They’re offering 50% to Rhino Bar and Pumphouse. I like Rhino Bar (and not only because it’s an Ohio State bar). They’ve got pretty good wings, a good beer selection and the atmosphere is pretty good.

Food Corner Kabob House

As DC neighborhoods go, Dupont Circle isn’t exactly known for cheap eats. The area is largely filled with overpriced restaurants, fast-casual chains, and restaurants well-suited for a date but not for a quick bite to eat. But two blocks away from the Circle itself, on P street between 20th and 21st Street, sits Food Corner Kabob House, a small kabob joint that’s serving up one of the best values in the district.

I was introduced to Food Corner Kabob House before I’d even moved to DC by my good friend AP, who insisted that one night of my visit to the district had to be spent eating dinner there.

Today is the second day in a row with some pretty weak deals.  Im hoping that this means that we are in for some great offers on the back end of this week.  Here is today’s roundup.

Fifty-Fifty: Once again, Scoutmob’s saving grace is that its coupons require no advanced purchase or even printing.  If this weren’t the case, today’s $5 off at Los Hermanos would likely be an avoid.  This isn’t to say that the genuine Dominican food at this Columbia Heights grocery turned cafeteria style dining room isn’t great.

South China Restaurant

The neighborhood Chinese restaurant. We’ve all got one. You know the names: Dynasty, Mayflower, the Magic Gourd, Mr. Chan’s, the list goes on forever. The food at each is always vaguely similar. They fall somewhere on the Below Average/Average/Above Average scale. It’s a go-to when you want Chinese food, but you don’t necessarily want to make the trek to get the good stuff. Sometimes, though, your- neighborhood spot is the good stuff.

I discovered this recently at South China in Del Ray, a neighborhood of Alexandria, conveniently located within walking distance from my new office.

Slim pickings this morning, folks.  A couple of decent offers but nothing great, and a couple of definite avoids.  Here’s hoping the rest of the week looks better.

Fifty-Fifty: Today’s Scoutmob for Thai at Corner in Arlington is a pretty good deal if you’re looking for a quick dine-in lunch for one: you’ll end up with some fairly well-reviewed Thai food for only about $5.  If you’re looking for dinner for two, though, the deal’s value drops significantly, and nothing about Thai at Corner suggests it’s a location to go out of your way for.

Will Work for Cooking Class

Even if you only ate at Eat the District-certified Bargain Bites restaurants, both your bank account and your health would probably start to suffer eventually. Most people cook the majority of their dinners, and after a few years of the same 10 recipes recycled over and over, this can start to get a little tiresome. Luckily, this is why God invented cooking classes: to let those of us who can’t just “Julia and Julia” our way through a cookbook learn and practice some new recipes in a safe, supervised space.

Happy Friday everyone. I wanted to take a quick second before I get to the deals to go on a quick tangent. I usually don’t participate in mourning celebrities. There’s always a million Facebook posts/tweets about Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, etc. but for the most part I never feel particularly moved by any of these tragic passings. Yesterday, however, was different. Mark Lavon Helm died at the age of 71. Better known as Levon, he was the drummer/singer for The Band. His death truly saddened me.

Quit Your Job and Work for Facebook

“Go west, young man.” – Horace Greeley

So I have a confession to make. Contrary to popular belief I do not spend all my time working on perfecting Eat The District. I have a full-time job (pause to let that bombshell sink in). And as luck would have it early this week I was fortunate enough to get to travel out west for a meeting at Facebook HQ. I’m not going to talk about why I was there or what I learned, but I will tell you about how I ate. Don’t worry: I was assured that this was okay and not part of the NDA I signed.

The Morning Roundup 04/19/2012

After a brief hiatus, I’m back on The Morning Roundup (I was out West, you’ll hear more about that later). And as if somehow the gods of the deal knew I was returning today, we’ve got some good ones for you:

Photo from The Capitol Deal

Must Buy: Capitol Deal’s $20 for $40 at The Cajun Experience features so many added perks it’s astounding. In addition to the money, it’s available for Sunday’s bottomless mimosa brunch AND if you go between Monday-Wednesday you get 50% off a bottle of wine.
