The Morning Roundup 9/18/2012

Welcome back to the roundup, and Happy New Year to all my friends in the tribe. We were out yesterday eating matzo ball soup and apples and honey until we couldn’t eat anymore. But we’re back and we have deal (yes I know, you read that right).

Must Buy: Who doesn’t love smoothies? They’re delicious, filling, and won’t kill you. Today’s Groupon for $5 for $10 to Jamba Juice is good to go. You have three locations to choose from with this one so wherever you are in the city should be within a not terrible distance from smoothie goodness.

Stachowski’s Stacks It High

As I said this morning, I love delis. Italian delis, Jewish delis, if they have sandwich I’m all in. The DMV has a lot of great Italian deli options. However, where’s the pastrami? A few spots loom on the horizon (we’re looking at you DGS), but if you’re looking for your handcut Katz-esque pastrami on rye or dark rye you had been pretty much out of luck.

Hold that thought. Stachowski’s in on the scene. I’d been hearing rumors of the mighty deli located in the spot of the old Griffin Market (a place whose closing I mourned).

Happy Wednesday y’all. The weather is still glorious so I hope you eat outside.

Must Buy (Foggy Bottom Only): Lunch is always a conundrum around my office. Where to eat? Am I sick of this place yet? Why do we keep going to the same three places? These are all questions that can plague you. When you get a good deal, however, it makes your decision easier. Today Google Offers brings you a deal for not one, but THREE lunch combos (sandwich, chips, drink) to Capitol Grounds Coffee (2100 Pennsylvania Ave. NW).

Mailbag: Fancy Sushi Dinner!

Sorry for the slow pace of posts recently: all the moving-associated activity has left us little time to try new places and write about them! Today, we’ve got another edition of the Mailbag, and one with a subject close to Eat the District’s hearts: Sushi!

I am looking for a great sushi restaurant in DC to take my boyfriend for our six month anniversary – any suggestions? Asian fusion works too, just would like great sushi on the menu! Somewhere nice, upscale, modern, somewhere we can dress up a little, preferably close to downtown.

Well hello there Monday. After yesterday’s glorious weather/football day, doesn’t going back to the grind just seem unfair? I know. I feel your pain. RG III was everything you’d hoped for, and my beloved Patriots looked like they may have found some defense. I hope you’re ready we got a lot in store.

Must Buy: I’m a big fan of Mexican food. Tacos are now all the rage. So now here comes The Capitol Deal with a tasty deal for 2 entrees and 2 margaritas for $25. The spot? Capital Hill’s own Mi Vecindad (1129 Pennsylvania Ave., SE).

A rainy Thursday. Your old pal Micah is hear to brighten up your day. We got a deal that I’m really excited about.

Must Buy: DC is possibly experiencing a Mexican revival. We Tacos El Chilango, the newly controversial Bandolero, and quite a few other good options. Today’s Scoutmob to Casa Oaxaca (2106 18th St., NW) is one of our patented no-brainers. Max discount of $20 is going to get you quite a bit of good food.

Must Buy: I love Kabob. With the platters at most places, you’re going to get so much food.

Fifty-fifty: Today’s Groupon deal of $10 for $20 at Chakra Cafe in Alexandria is all-around just eh. Eh location for most of the district. Eh-looking menu with eh reviews online. And an eh deal at only $10 for $20. Not bad enough for an all-out avoid, but definitely not a must-buy, this is a deal to get only if you frequent Alexandria.

How is everyone doing? It’s September, you’re back at work after a (hopefully) nice and relaxing weekend. We get it you’re not doing well. Au Revoir Tenleytown

As many of you know for the past year the Eat The District gang has made their home in the wilds of Tenleytown. Well those days are about to end. We are relocating to the equally wild and, more importantly, food rich U Street corridor. It is with a heavy heart that we leave our cityburb home. But alas times change and it’s to move onwards and upwards. Before I left the upper NW I thought it would be wise to offer a few parting thoughts on the Tenleytown area.

Tenleytown is a neighborhood without a food identity. Given the fact that the neighborhood is comprised of upper middle class families, this is surprising.

Today we got one deal for you and it’s pretty good.

Must Buy: Scoutmob usually straddles the line between categories, but often is pushed over the edge because of it’s awesome business model. Today’s deal to J. Paul’s Dining Saloon (3218 M St., NW) is no different. The max discount is $20, which at J. Paul’s is right on the border of being a good deal. But no pressure to buy ahead makes it a slam dunk. If you’re in Georgetown and you can’t get into Bandolero (or you don’t want to shell out the bucks) and you need a very good second option, J.
