The Morning Roundup 6/26/2012

Happy Tuesday everyone. The weather this morning was beautiful and the forecast looks fantastic. We got so

Must Buy: This first one is for all you Montgomery County dwellers. Bethesda has a lot of good restaurants, and one you may have overlooked was Pizza Tempo (8021 Wisconsin Avenue, Bethesda, MD). Google Offers has $10 for $20 today and we like it. With a lot of good looking pizzas this deal will get you an XL pizza at a minimum. With a rather extensive menu you can mix and match your way to $20 easily. Who doesn’t love discounted pizza?

The Rammys 2012

Staying Hydrated Rammy's Style

On Sunday night the DMV’s food community gathered at the Rammys, DC’s restaurant-industry awards gala, to celebrate the best in the business. A lot of pride was at stake and there were more than a few notable events.

One of the big names honored last night was former DC Mayor Anthony Williams. Mayor Williams was the man who brought the Nationals to DC and was also instrumental in reviving DC’s restaurant scene. I caught up with him in a buffet line. When I pressed him for one of his favorite spots he backed us on Liberty Tree, stating that it is one of his “go to” spots in the city.

Only one new deal to welcome you into the new week, but it is pretty crazy.

Must Buy: $5 for a Lou’s City Bar discount card from The Capitol Deal.  This savings punch card gets you ten draft beers for $2 off and five orders of wings at $5 each.  Their drafts mostly sit between $6 and $8 and a dozen wings would normally cost you $11 dollars.  Still following?  That is a total of $50 dollars in savings, to be used over time, at your leisure, for $5.  Oh, did I mention wings come in four flavors? Buffalo, BBQ, Jerk, and Chesapeake.

Today’s a double whammy: it’s too hot out AND there are no great deals.

Fifty-Fifty: Today’s Scoutmob deal at Bungalow Sports Grill is a typical sports bar deal: if you’re already here, take advantage and get some food. If not, don’t go out of your way to eat here. Good thing it’s a Scoutmob!

Avoid: What’s riskier than eating at a sports bar? Eating at a nightclub. Stay away from today’s LivingSocial deal at The Park at 14, and spend your money on better food elsewhere

Open Door Dining: A Brand New DC Dinner Club

The words “open door” require no explanation; they’re instantly warm, friendly, and inviting, imploring you to drop by at any time and see what’s going on. That’s exactly how Clementina Russo wants you to feel. Clementina is the brains – and everything else – behind Open Door Dining, a new dinner club in DC hosting its first meal this Friday night. The outgoing chef at Big Bear Cafe, Clementina chose the name “as kind of a throwback to my living situation in Maine, where the back door was always open which led into my kitchen.

Only one deal today, but it’s a gem. Once again I hope you stay cool today and make sure you’re drinking enough water.

Must Buy: I love Kabab. There’s something about skewered meat and a good bread that makes for a perfect meal. It is often on the pricey side, despite how much food you get. That’s why today’s Scoutmob to Mayur Kabob House (1108 K St., NW) is perfect. With a max discount of $15 you’re going to get mighty close to a 2 for 1 entree deal. And with meat, rice, and naan you’re going to get quite the feast.

Good morning and happy Wednesday. It’s going to be a scorcher out there, so be careful and make sure you’re staying hydrated.

Must Buy: Cheap pizza is cheap pizza is cheap pizza. A lot of it’s the same and mostly it’s not bad to good. But when you can get two slices, a salad, and a soda for $5 you can’t pass it up. Groupon has just that deal today to Washington Deli Pizza and Catering (5830 Georgia Ave. NW). Hurry on up to Petworth and chow down.

Fifty-Fifty/Avoid: File this one under deals I really wanted to like, but ultimately just couldn’t convince myself that it was worth it.

Bloo Moo: Oh the Toppings

I love froyo. I’m going to go out on a limb and say I like it more than ice cream. Heresy, you cry! Madness, you scream! It’s true my friends. Give me a cup of tart yogurt over a cup of your finest cookie dough any day. This has nothing to do with health consciousness or my love(?) of probiotics. What this has to do with is straight up taste. I enjoy the crisp and refreshing flavor of yogurt on a hot summer day. One of the DC food fads that I’ve truly embraced, especially the DIY version that’s become so prevalent, frozen yogurt has quickly become one of my favorite desserts.

Only one deal today, but it’s a great one!

Must-Buy: The Capitol Deal’s $10 for $20 worth of Mexican food at Taqueria Distrito Federal is close to the perfect deal.  Taqueria Distrito Federal, with one location in Columbia Heights and one in Petworth, has a great reputation as one of the go-to spots in the District for authentic Mexican food, serving up tacos, burritos, tostados and more and selling Jarritos and horchata for you to wash it all down.  And for $20, you’re easily going to get a meal for two: you could even feed three if you weren’t particularly hungry.
