Yellow Vendor: Truck Love

I have been involved in my own private love affair with food trucks for quite some time now.  Our relationship is exciting and ever changing.  Yes, sometimes food trucks let me down, and of course we have problems just like everyone else.  But we always seem to bounce back and I frequently find myself returned to the warm embrace of the ever-welcoming food truck community.

My relationship with these rolling restaurants didn’t begin with Yellow Vendor, but since first having it a while back, the sparsely adorned bright yellow truck has sat on page one of my little black book.

To the deals!

Fifty-Fifty:  H Street Country Club is a fixture on the Atlas District, and today’s Groupon can get you $20 for $40 for food, drinks, and games.  While the Mexican-style menu has received pretty good reviews, we wouldn’t recommend buying this just for dinner.  But if you’re interested in getting a burrito, a margarita, and playing some mini-golf, this deal may be too good to pass up.

Fifty-Fifty: Marx Cafe may call itself revolutionary, but today’s Scoutmob deal isn’t.

In Praise Of

The Joy of McDonald’s Breakfast

At some level, everyone acknowledges that McDonald’s is bad. It’s certainly not healthy for you, and it often leaves you feeling sick afterwards. We eat it at all hours because it’s cheap, it’s damn tasty while you eat it, and oftentimes it’s 3 am on a Friday night and nothing else is open while we’re heading home (among my friends we refer to this as going to McD’s on the backend).

After my rant about not liking chain restaurants in my Olive Garden post, this may seem a bit hypocritical, but today’s In Praise Of will focus solely on my favorite of McDonald’s offerings: breakfast.

We have a couple of tough calls this morning.  And there is a whole lot to talk about, but, we can put another notch in the Scoutmob column today, as once again their deal reigns supreme.

Must-Buy: Today’s Scoutmob offers $5 for $10 at FoBoGro’s sandwich shop, located under their eclectic grocery on campus at GWU.  I know five dollars seems pretty small, but Scoutmob’s ‘no need to buy ahead’ formula makes this a no brainer.  The sandwiches here are big and memorable, especially the big fat Pauley, a big turkey number which has cooler ranch doritos on it, and The Famous McDougall, a buffalo chicken sub that will likely leave you with some leftover.

Bargain Bites

El Pollo Sabroso

In general, DC struggles with cheap and delicious ethnic food. It lacks the abundance of small, family-owned Indian, Vietnamese, Thai, and other restaurants that are found in many big cities in the northeast and across the country. While the most notable exception to the rule is certainly the district’s large selection of incredible Ethiopian restaurants, I’ve instead found myself turning for a quick, cheap bite to the District’s sometimes-overlooked Latin American food, which can be found all over the northern side of Northwest DC.

Nothing too spectacular this morning, but there’s a couple of deals that may be worth your attention, and one you shouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole.  Here’s the roundup:

Fifty-Fifty: The Capitol Deal’s offer of $15.50 for an entree and unlimited mimosas or bloody marys at Ulah Bistro is real tempting.  Ulah Bistro serves up a delicious brunch – I recommend the Eggs Chesapeake – and is a great place to spend a Saturday morning/early afternoon.  That being said, this deal is only worth it for the drinks.

A Cut Above

Mintwood Place

Welcome to A Cut Above. This column is dedicated to places outside of our normal milieu. These restaurants are for dates, special occasions, or when you just want to feel like a boss. We love to eat, but can’t always afford the indulgence. We don’t necessarily think these restaurants are better than our bargain bites, but they’re a step above where the wallet is concerned.

Mintwood Place has been written about extensively in the DC blogosphere. Some of the feedback has been good and some has been more tepid.

Happy Friday the 13th. Once again we don’t have a ton of new deals, but there is one that looks worth a trip up CUA way.

Must Buy: We should start keeping a tally of Must Buy victories because Scoutmob is running away with it. Today they give us 50% off at The Brookland Cafe. This restaurant is simple good food, nothing fancy, nothing that will break the bank ($25 off here is a great bargain). Bring some friends, chow down, enjoy yourself. Maybe you’ll even meet your future spouse (the owner claims 3 engaged couples met at his restaurant).

Food deals are scarce this Thursday morning, with only one new deal to report. Luckily, it’s a good one.

Must-Buy: Chasin’ Tails Crawfish, the location of today’s $10 for $20 Scoutmob deal, only opened last month, but early reviews are stellar.  Crawfish is shipped in from Louisiana daily and sold by the pound, along with other fresh-caught seafood.  With your choice of Cajun-style, lemon-pepper, garlic-butter, or a mix of all 3 preparations, and options to make it as spicy as you want, Chasin’ Tails Crawfish lets you eat your fish just the way you want it.
