The Morning Roundup

The Morning Roundup 4/27/2012

It’s time to say goodbye and good riddance to this week, which has been pretty terrible for deals.  Today is no exception, with nothing particularly great coming your way. Here’s hoping next week shapes up a little bit better.

[UPDATE] Must Buy: Cafe Sazon in Arlington dropped a last minute fantastic deal on us. Groupon has three deals to pick from but we’re recommending the $33 for a dinner for 4. For $8.25 you get an entree, a dessert, and a drink. WHAT?!? The food must have to be terrible. Not so.

The Morning Roundup 4/26/2012

Happy Thursday y’all. The weather outside is not looking so hot today. Similary, the deals aren’t looking so hot. Like the nice weather, the good deals will come again. I promise.

Must Buy UPDATE: Groupon came out with a new deal late in the game and it’s a winner: $20 for $40 to Lebanese Taverna. I love Lebanese food and although it’s a bit pricey here, the quality is good and you’ll easily be able to get two entrees with this deal. And given the quality of this week’s deal, this one is a certainly a must buy.

The Morning Roundup 4/25/2012

A pretty weak week for deals. We do have one that’s worth checking out and one to give a pass to. I’m hoping we roll into Thursday and Friday with some gems, but alas we don’t control the deals, only report on them.

Must Buy: If we were doing a tally (and we’re not, though maybe we should be) Scoutmob would be the leader for best deals. Today is no different. They’re offering 50% to Rhino Bar and Pumphouse. I like Rhino Bar (and not only because it’s an Ohio State bar). They’ve got pretty good wings, a good beer selection and the atmosphere is pretty good.

Today is the second day in a row with some pretty weak deals.  Im hoping that this means that we are in for some great offers on the back end of this week.  Here is today’s roundup.

Fifty-Fifty: Once again, Scoutmob’s saving grace is that its coupons require no advanced purchase or even printing.  If this weren’t the case, today’s $5 off at Los Hermanos would likely be an avoid.  This isn’t to say that the genuine Dominican food at this Columbia Heights grocery turned cafeteria style dining room isn’t great.

Slim pickings this morning, folks.  A couple of decent offers but nothing great, and a couple of definite avoids.  Here’s hoping the rest of the week looks better.

Fifty-Fifty: Today’s Scoutmob for Thai at Corner in Arlington is a pretty good deal if you’re looking for a quick dine-in lunch for one: you’ll end up with some fairly well-reviewed Thai food for only about $5.  If you’re looking for dinner for two, though, the deal’s value drops significantly, and nothing about Thai at Corner suggests it’s a location to go out of your way for.

Happy Friday everyone. I wanted to take a quick second before I get to the deals to go on a quick tangent. I usually don’t participate in mourning celebrities. There’s always a million Facebook posts/tweets about Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Michael Jackson, etc. but for the most part I never feel particularly moved by any of these tragic passings. Yesterday, however, was different. Mark Lavon Helm died at the age of 71. Better known as Levon, he was the drummer/singer for The Band. His death truly saddened me.

To the deals!

Fifty-Fifty:  H Street Country Club is a fixture on the Atlas District, and today’s Groupon can get you $20 for $40 for food, drinks, and games.  While the Mexican-style menu has received pretty good reviews, we wouldn’t recommend buying this just for dinner.  But if you’re interested in getting a burrito, a margarita, and playing some mini-golf, this deal may be too good to pass up.

Fifty-Fifty: Marx Cafe may call itself revolutionary, but today’s Scoutmob deal isn’t.

We have a couple of tough calls this morning.  And there is a whole lot to talk about, but, we can put another notch in the Scoutmob column today, as once again their deal reigns supreme.

Must-Buy: Today’s Scoutmob offers $5 for $10 at FoBoGro’s sandwich shop, located under their eclectic grocery on campus at GWU.  I know five dollars seems pretty small, but Scoutmob’s ‘no need to buy ahead’ formula makes this a no brainer.  The sandwiches here are big and memorable, especially the big fat Pauley, a big turkey number which has cooler ranch doritos on it, and The Famous McDougall, a buffalo chicken sub that will likely leave you with some leftover.

Nothing too spectacular this morning, but there’s a couple of deals that may be worth your attention, and one you shouldn’t touch with a ten-foot pole.  Here’s the roundup:

Fifty-Fifty: The Capitol Deal’s offer of $15.50 for an entree and unlimited mimosas or bloody marys at Ulah Bistro is real tempting.  Ulah Bistro serves up a delicious brunch – I recommend the Eggs Chesapeake – and is a great place to spend a Saturday morning/early afternoon.  That being said, this deal is only worth it for the drinks.

Food deals are scarce this Thursday morning, with only one new deal to report. Luckily, it’s a good one.

Must-Buy: Chasin’ Tails Crawfish, the location of today’s $10 for $20 Scoutmob deal, only opened last month, but early reviews are stellar.  Crawfish is shipped in from Louisiana daily and sold by the pound, along with other fresh-caught seafood.  With your choice of Cajun-style, lemon-pepper, garlic-butter, or a mix of all 3 preparations, and options to make it as spicy as you want, Chasin’ Tails Crawfish lets you eat your fish just the way you want it.
