The Morning Roundup

The Morning Roundup 07/13/2012

It’s Friday the 13th, which might be why today’s deals aren’t great. Here’s what we got.

Fifty-fifty: Scoutmob’s deal for today is up to $12 off at El Gavilan. The good: El Gavilan gets great reviews and seems to be a stellar Salvadoran place. The bad: it’s all the way up in Silver Spring, and parts of the menu seem to be quite expensive, meaning $12 may not get you far.  Definite 50-50.

Avoid: LivingSocial’s deal for $25 for $50 at Againn Gastropub just isn’t enough.

In Praise Of

English Coastal Cheddar

I have strong opinions about a lot of food items. Some of you will call it snobbery (and probably rightfully so), but I consider it knowing what I want. One of these areas is cheese. Especially cheddar cheese. It’s my favorite, and I have taken a lot of time and sampled a lot of different varieties and producers to know what I like. I’ve had cheddar from Vermont, Wisconsin, Oregon, California, New York, Quebec, Ireland, England, the list goes on. So what’s my favorite? English Coastal Cheddar.

Welcome back everyone. Hope you had a great Wednesday. We got one deal today that I’m pretty excited about, and one deal that I can’t accurately judge so I’ll leave it up to you.

Must Buy: The Spanish tapas craze has gripped DC. Every cuisine now is all in on small plates. However, Spanish food is not limited to small portions and sharing. Today’s Scoutmob to Top Spanish Café (3541 Georgia Ave., NW) proves just that. Yes they have tapas, but there’s a lot to offer. And with a $25 max discount you’re looking at a lot of food.

Food Trucks

Bayou Bros: Gator Done

If you find yourself at the intersection of 12th and G streets, NW, during the lunch rush, you are going to find that you have a few too many options.  You see, Metro Center is a food truck hub.  It isn’t as hectic as Farragut Friday perhaps, but coming face to face (face to truck?) with six or seven distinct rolling eateries can be a grueling decision making experience.  This is the situation I find myself in on a particular Tuesday afternoon.  I decide against hitting up my old standard, Yellow Vendor, because I want to bring you something new.

Did you survive the sudden rainstorm last night? I hope you did. I hope you weren’t outside eating a lovely meal when it hit. If you were, let’s hope these deals make you feel better.

Must Buy: I really like Indian food, and as I’ve complained here before sometimes you get deals to Indian restaurants that just aren’t worth it. You want to like them, but Indian is often just too pricey. So that’s why The Capitol Deal’s deal to Rasoi Indian Kitchen (1810 K St., NW) is awesome.

Kouzina Angelina: A Homecoming

This post is one of a personal nature for me. It is perhaps going to ramble a bit more than usual, but I promise it’s worth it. This is a story about friendship and pizza. The story begins back in 2009. I was living on P St in Dupont, writing for the original incarnation of Eat the District, and happened to discover a magical pizza place known as Goody’s. Many of my friends ate there with me in those days and remember Angelina, the pizza chef with quite possibly the biggest heart in the restaurant business.

Only one deal coming your way this morning.  Here’s what we’ve got.

Fifty-Fifty:  Scoutmob’s $15 off at Fez Bistro in Falls Church isn’t particularly thrilling, but it’s a fairly solid deal.  $15 off will get you close to two entrees, though you’ll almost certainly go a bit over, and reviews of the food at Fez Bistro and its sister restaurant Taste of Morocco are decent enough.  In Falls Church, it’s a bit out of the way for District residents, and make sure you check the time: the deal is only available from 8-10 pm on Monday and 6-10 pm Tuesday through Sunday.

A Cut Above

Bistro Bohem

When you think of European food, you probably think of Italy and France, or maybe Spanish tapas and British pub food.  Odds are you haven’t thought much, if at all, of the Czech Republic, a country not exactly known in America for its food.  But Bistro Bohem, which opened in March in Shaw, is quickly trying to change some attitudes in DC.  Bistro Bohem’s delicious take on Central/Eastern European food, based on the owner’s Czechoslovakian heritage, might just convince Washingtonians to turn their attention just a bit further east.

Welcome back Monday. I know last week we were a little slow in the post-4th heat. But the weather has cooled down! The worst may be very well behind, and we’re back in action. Hopefully the deals have returned from their time off as well. Let’s take a look:

Must Buy: One of DC’s most recent food fads was the burger craze. Many places sprung up seemingly overnight. One of these that joined the fray was brgr:shack (4215 Fairfax Dr., Arlington) is one such place. Not to be confused with BGR or Shake Shack, today’s Google Offer is $3.50 for $7 toward their premium burgers.

King Street Cafe

We’ve talked in the past about the neighborhood deli. It’s a great thing. The place where you go where the owner knows your name and knows your order. The food’s inexpensive and you can get it and get out without much fuss. I told about one of Del Ray’s with Market 2 Market. Today I’m venturing over Old Town to hit up another excellent spot, King Street Cafe.

In an area known for its good food, King Street Cafe may be one of the area’s more unassuming spots. It really is a hole in the wall.
