Pulpo: Tentacular

We talk about Cleveland Park a lot here at Eat The District.  Maybe too much.  But the commercial stretch of Connecticut Avenue betwixt Porter and Macomb is truly a culinary gold mine.  Establishments such as Ardeo-Bardeo, Ripple, Medium Rare, and Palena would deter some restaurateurs from jumping into this packed culinary environment.  But just a few weeks ago, owner Dino Tapper (also of Logan Circle’s Floriana)  brought his newest creation, Pulpo, into the mix. I am happy to report that this Cephalopod focused Tapas spot does not disappoint.

The Morning Roundup 6/18/2012

What a lovely Monday we have on our hands! After a wonderful weather weekend (that I hope you spent outside grilling) we’re back in action. We have a lot of good things coming your way this week here on ETD. We’ll start off the day with a few good deals and a few non-traditional deals.

Must Buy: If you love pig, then we have a very fascinating deal for you this morning. The Capitol Deal is offering a number of interesting packages from the Pig of the Month club. With a number of packages to choose from (all at great prices) you can really spice up your summer BBQ with great meat.

The Morning Roundup 6/15/2012

Oh, it’s Friday! The end of the week. La fin de semana. The weather is beautiful today and the forecast looks great for the weekend. Do we have deals to send you on your way? You bet we do!

Must Buy: DC does Ethiopian food well. It’s one of our strongest international cuisines. Any social coupon to an Ethiopian restaurant will immediate pique my interest. Make it a good Ethiopian restaurant and I’m sold. Groupon’s $7 for $15 for lunch or $15 for 30 for dinner to Nile Ethiopian (7815 Georgia Ave.

Drink the District: Church and State

Last week I wrote about The Liberty Tree, my favorite place on H Street to sit back, eat some fries, and drink a beer.  Today, it’s time to share my favorite place to go right after.  Almost every time I’ve eaten at The Liberty Tree, the night has continued a couple of blocks away at the speakeasy-style bar Church and State.  Located up a flight of stairs (directly above the bar formerly known as Fruit Bat, which will reopen soon in an undisclosed new format), Church and State mixes prohibition style drinks with flair.

Only two for you this morning, but they’re both great!

Must-buy: It’s about to be summer in DC, which means ice cream will be a must-buy even at full price. So if Google Offers wants to give you a deal of 4 small cups of Ben and Jerry’s for $10, you’d be dumb not to take it. Spend the summer cooling off with some Chunky Monkey or, my favorite, Chocolate Fudge Brownie.

Must-Buy:  Today’s Scoutmob for brunch at Kushi is Kushi’s second deal in recent weeks, and like the first one, this is a must-buy.

Sticky Rice: Millenium +12

We here at Eat The District talk about sushi a lot. I have a small theory as to the nature of not only our personal infatuations with this cuisine, but with our love of sushi as a community; not just as a metropolitan community, not as an American community, but as a global community. The reason that we, as a race, love sushi is because when it is done right, it is arguably some of the best food on planet Earth. Sushi is a testament to simplicity and how far we can go with just fresh ingredients. Put simply sushi rocks.

MMMMM...

The Morning Roundup: 6/13/2012

Big day for us here at ETD, as this roundup marks our 100th post!!! A big thank you to all of our readers, you all rock. We got a couple of interesting offers for you today!

Must Buy: Scoutmob’s $15 for $30 to Red Tomato Cafe is just a really nice basic offer. There isn’t too much fine print to annoy you. Most of the dishes on the menu float somewhere around $15 (less during lunch). And they reportedly have some really yummy brick oven pizza. This deal really boils down to two people being able to eat two interesting pizzas and only paying for one.

Vace

The strip of storefronts across the street from the Cleveland Park Metro station is filled with classier restaurants: Ardeo + Bardeo, Ripple, Lavandou, and Dino are all there, and Palena is only shopping center away.  But tucked in among these pricey, white tablecloth restaurants is Vace, an unassuming Italian delicatessen and store that’s hands down the best food value in the neighborhood.

Let’s start with the pizza. Is it 2 Amys or La Forchetta?

Only two deals this morning [LATE BREAKING FOURTH DEAL UPDATE].  Here you are:

Fifty-Fifty: Got a date planned and looking for somewhere nice to go?  Take advantage of Scoutmob’s deal at 1905 Bistro, where $25 off will just about cover dinner for two at this French/Southern hybrid.  The food gets mixed reviews, so it may not be worth it if you’re just looking for a great meal, but the vibe is perfect for wooing your potential significant other.

Avoid:  The Capitol Deal’s wine-and-food-pairing class for two for $79 is just too expensive for me to recommend, especially considering the lack of reviews available for Food and Wine by Nafi.

Siam House

We’ve written about Thai food in this space before. DC is home to many mediocre overpriced Thai restaurants. It’s very easy to serve a passable Pad Thai. It’s not a very complex dish. But making really good, really fresh Thai food is more challenging. There’s fewer out of this world Thai restaurants out there. You have to wade through a lot of bad Tom Yum Soup to find the truly good places. Evan found one in Beau Thai. I’m going to tell today about one of my favorite, Cleveland Park’s Siam House.
