The Morning Roundup 8/27/2012

Welcome back to Monday. We apologize for taking Friday off, but the deals just weren’t there. So we turn the page and enter the last week of August. Scary. Football season is inching ever closer.

Must Buy: There is rarely a really good sushi deal. Often you’ll get a “lounge” type deal to a place that serves mediocre sushi. Or the bargain just won’t be there. Today’s LivingSocial for $20 for $40 at Sushiko (2309 Wisconsin Ave.,NW) is both a good bargain (for sushi) and has some tasty food.

Bargain Bites

The Greek Spot

It’s a well-worn cliché, whether you’re buying a house or opening a store: it’s all about location, location, location. But when I think about The Greek Spot, located on 11th street just north of U Street, it’s one of the first things that comes to mind. For all that U street has to offer, there are less counter-service restaurants for a quick, cheap bite of food than you’d expect, and The Greek Spot fills this hole with large portions of gyro, souvlaki, and falafel. Whether you’re catching a show at the 9:30 Club or DC9 or are late meeting up with some friends at the bar, The Greek Spot is in the perfect location for you to stop by and fill up.

Welcome to Thursday. We are now officially less than two weeks from football season. Can you feel it? Let’s get to it.

Must Buy:
Yesterday Groupon had a late deal that I want to tell you about. It’s very similar to a deal we ran a few months ago, so I’m going to mostly plagiarize myself. I’m a big fan of a prix fixe menu. I often am overwhelmed by choices, and restauranteurs generally know what’s best on the menu. This menus, however, can often be expensive. Today’s LivingSocial Groupon deal is anything but.

A Cut Above

Eatonville: Southern Comfort

Brought to the U street area in 2009 by Busboys and Poets’ Andy Shallal, southern comfort eatery Eatonville brings far more to the neighborhood than it’s far oversized dining room might indicate.  Receiving a big thumbs up from Michelle Obama in the form of two visits in less than half a year, Eatonville really is worth trying out.

Before getting into the menu itself, some aspects of my eating experience at Eatonville really stand out.  The oversized dining room, while a bit daunting, is nicely decorated, well lit and allows the establishment to host interesting events like their ‘Food &Folklore’ series.

Welcome to the middle of the week. Nothing much to say about it that any other Wednesday. So… to the deals!

Scoutmob:
I am not H Street Correspondent Evan Chiacchiaro. However, I do enjoy a good burger. Today’s Scoutmob to The Big Board (421 H St., NE) screams Must Buy. It excludes Happy Hour (as is often the case), but does have a lot to offer deal wise. The burgers are serious stuff. $10 discount will get you two burgers easily. The drinks are not crazy expensive so you won’t break the bank here.

Eating the Iceland

Last week I was off in the great North. My family and I took a trip to not so faraway Iceland (5 hours by plane). Before going a read a lot that Iceland is not a country known for it’s culinary tradition. The food is expensive and lackluster. However, in my experience I found that this may be an unfair view. I had a lot of really good dining experiences both at restaurants and eating at home.

Today I’ll share with you some of the highlights and one of the oh so lowlights.

Highlight: Skyr. If you know me, you know I’m very much into Greek Yogurt.

Maybe I’m just feeling indecisive this morning, but while both of these deals are definitely worth a look, neither rose to that must-buy level.  Here’s what we got for you.

Fifty-fifty:  Just like last time Fujimar offered a deal, I find myself really tempted to pick up today’s Groupon for $40 for $20 and go try the Latin/Asian fusion menu at this Penn Quarter restaurant. Though the promise of fresh, delicious seafood makes this worth it for anyone who’s been waiting to make the trip and wants a few dollars off, $40 won’t get you a meal for two, keeping this deal from being a must-buy.

AND WE’RE BACK! After a week off, I’m back in action and ready to eat. You’ll hear all about my adventures in Iceland later this week. But first we want to get your week started off right with a few deals.

Must Buy: The Capitol Deal always intrigues me. They often have pretty interesting combination deals, and today is no different. Today they’re offering $22 for an entree and wine flight at Station 4 (1101 4th St., SW). This means three glasses (or tastes as is usually the case) and an entree for $22.

Happy Friday. Today’s my last day before vacation. You’ll hear some dispatches from my adventures in the coming week. But for now let’s part ways with some deals to tide you over. I’m going out on a high note with two Must Buys.

Must Buy: In a city not known for it’s pizza there’s a few places that have good deals and pretty good pizza. We’ve written about a few of them before, but today’s LivingSocial deal is for $14 for $30 to Flippin’ Pizza (1745 Connecticut Ave., NW).

Mailbag: Parents in Town

My parents are coming to town this weekend, and I’m looking for a good restaurant for dinner on Friday night. Last time they were here, we ate at Founding Farmers, which was very well received. We’re pretty open to a variety of cuisines, and it can be a little pricey but not too extravagant. I work by Farragut West and live in Crystal City, so pretty much anything in the south half of DC and anywhere in Arlington is fair game.  Any recommendations? Thanks!

I have plenty of recommendations! First off, again, there’s always Micah’s mother’s excellent guide to eating the District with parents.
