The Morning Roundup: 5/16/2012

Whelp… It is pretty bleak out there today.  It appears that we only have one deal today.  And unfortunately it seems to be an

Avoid: It is hard to give a Scoutmob deal an avoid ranking but I just have to with their %50 off El Tamarindo.  A max discount of ten dollars really wont come close to covering two entrees here, most of which seem to be in the $13 area.  Also, the restaurant seems to advertise its sangria pretty heavily even though this too seems over priced.  Perhaps, this is due to it’s proximity to Adam’s Morgan.

Pork Barrel BBQ

Welcome back to our 2nd of a two part piece on Pork Barrel BBQ. Yesterday you read my interview with co-owner Bill Blackburn (what? you didn’t read it? go and do that NOW), today I’m going to talk about the food.

Let’s get this out of the way: the food at Pork Barrel is phenomenal. They turn out consistently moist and tender barbecue and everything I’ve had there is delicious. When eating barbecue I tend to favor beef barbecue, and so today I’m going to talk about two of their dishes that you may not know about due to your love of pork.

The Morning Roundup 5/15/2012

Hello Tuesday. What terrible weather you’ve brought us. Luckily we have some deals to brighten your gloomy day.

Must Buy: $10 for $20 to Vince & Dominic’s Pizza (10474 Auto Park Avenue, Bethesda) from Google Offers screams Must Buy. The food here is good and cheap. You’re going to get a Large or Extra Large Pizza or two pasta dishes or two subs or a lot of other great combinations. It’s your standard pizza place, and everyone loves cheap pizza.

Must Buy: 50% off Artfully Chocolate and Fizz Bar is right up my alley.

An Interview With Pork Barrel’s Bill Blackburn

Last week I sat down with Pork Barrel BBQ/Mango Mike’s co-owner Bill Blackburn for a wide-ranging interview on the restaurant, the DC BBQ scene, Del Ray, and some future projects. We also coaxed an exclusive tidbit out for the loyal readers of Eat the District.  Check back tomorrow for a full write up of Pork Barrel (read our thoughts here).

I know Pork Barrel really started as the sauce with Heath Hall and Brett Thompson. How did the restaurant come about?

I’ll walk you through that because it’s kind of a complicated thing.

The Morning Roundup 5/14/2012

Welcome back to the The Morning Roundup. Happy Monday all, I hope you’re staying dry out there. The weather’s looking gross today and tomorrow, so hopefully we’ll have some deals to warm you up.

Must Buy: Scoutmob has a good deal in Takoma Park today. Middle Eastern Cuisine and Market may not have the best name for a restaurant (or even close to the best name), but the food is good and relatively inexpensive for Middle Eastern food. You’re not getting a huge discount here, but the food is worth it.

Welcome to Friday. We finally made it! The weekend is upon. We got a few deals for you worth noting. If you haven’t bought your ticket for Pasties and Popcorn, do it now.

Must Buy: Scoutmob has a pretty good looking deal over at Blue Banana Sports and Rock Bar. Not a huge discount ($10), but nothing is going to be terribly expensive and the Petworth spot has a lot to offer. As always, it’s not available during happy hour. Head over to Petworth and check it out!

Fifty-Fifty: The deal is only fifty-fifty if you don’t own a grill.

$1 Sushi Happy Hour

Sushi doesn’t exactly scream cheap eats. In fact, there’s something a little bit frightening about eating inexpensive raw fish – it raises far too many questions in my head, at least. Why is this so cheap? Is it old? Is it low-quality? Do I really want to be eating bargain raw fish? It doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. When you’re eating sushi you’re willing to pay more to know it’s good, and a night at a sushi place typically turns into an expensive affair.

Morning!  Get excited.  We have a couple of really strong deals for you today folks.

Must Buy: 50% off 876 Cafe in Van Ness seems to be a homerun.  I am not super familiar with Jamaican food but rumor has it that this spot, located right at the Van Ness UDC metro, does it right.  They have a nice sized menu full of mouth watering items like jerked chicken and short ribs.  And with 50% off up to $30, you are going to be able to try several different dishes, especially if you come during lunch when they have a discounted menu.

Phillies Phamous Cheesesteak: An American Institution

“Some claim the war of American independence was won by brave patriots on the battlefield.  Others say by the pens of the great statesmen of the Continental Congress.  No friends, the war was won by the Philadelphia Cheese Steak.” -Benjamin Franklin*

And the cheesesteak has been dominating ever since.  A staple from the city of brotherly love, the cheesesteak is just what it says, a chopped steak sandwich topped with cheese.  And as the food truck fleet has long been a bastion of regional specialties transplanted into our nation’s capital (like so), it was only a matter of time before we got a cheesesteak truck.

Happy hump day everyone! Hope you want deals because we got some for you.

Special Must Buy: Our friends over at Scoutmob have a pretty good non-food related deal that we wanted to share with you. This comes from their new Hand-picked line of deals. What they got for you is $25 for two tickets to their Pasties and Popcorn event. The event is down on H St. NE (my new favorite neighborhood) at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. It’s a burlesque show that features food from Stella’s Popkern (recently discussed here).
