The Morning Roundup

The Morning Roundup 08/10/2012

Happy Friday. Today’s my last day before vacation. You’ll hear some dispatches from my adventures in the coming week. But for now let’s part ways with some deals to tide you over. I’m going out on a high note with two Must Buys.

Must Buy: In a city not known for it’s pizza there’s a few places that have good deals and pretty good pizza. We’ve written about a few of them before, but today’s LivingSocial deal is for $14 for $30 to Flippin’ Pizza (1745 Connecticut Ave., NW).

Mailbag: Parents in Town

My parents are coming to town this weekend, and I’m looking for a good restaurant for dinner on Friday night. Last time they were here, we ate at Founding Farmers, which was very well received. We’re pretty open to a variety of cuisines, and it can be a little pricey but not too extravagant. I work by Farragut West and live in Crystal City, so pretty much anything in the south half of DC and anywhere in Arlington is fair game.  Any recommendations? Thanks!

I have plenty of recommendations! First off, again, there’s always Micah’s mother’s excellent guide to eating the District with parents.

Theme of the day: restaurants we’ve featured before on The Morning Roundup. One deal gets better, one deal loses some value, and one deal is so similar I’m just going to copy and paste.  Here’s what we got for you today.

Must-buy: Today’s Groupon is $12 for $26 Boston-import The Upper Crust in Dupont Circle, and if you’re craving some good pizza this is one you shouldn’t miss.  This deal has a bit more going for it than the $10 for $20 one Micah gave a fifty-fifty in April; with $26, you’ll easily have enough food for 3, maybe 4 people, as this should cover or come close to covering both a pizza and one of their calzones.

Happy Wednesday. It’s only three more days until the weekend. You can do it!

Must Buy: I’ve never had food from New Zealand. I know they eat a lot of lamb, but beyond that I’m at a loss. So that’s partly why today’s Scoutmob to Cassatt’s Kiwi Cafe & Gallery (4536 Lee Hwy, Arlington, VA) is so intriguing. With a max discount of $10 at lunch or $15 at dinner you’re going to get a good amount of food, a lot of which looks mighty tasty.

Avoid: A lot of times you’ll see restaurants featured on multiple deal sites.

Tacos El Chilango

You’ve already read my review of El Chilango the food truck (if you haven’t read it here). About a month ago it was announced that they would be opening a store on V Street. And then it was announced that it would open my birthday week. And then I found out I was moving 5 blocks away. So consider me excited when I checked it out last week. Would it live up to the truck? Would there be more menu options? Would there be habanero slaw. The answer to all these questions is an emphatic yes.

A heaping plate of goodness

Tacos El Chilango the store lives up to the hype.

Only one deal so far this morning, but it’s a great one.  We’ll keep you posted if anything else rolls in.

Must-Buy: Considering its free, the words “must-buy” seem incorrect, but you know what we mean: today’s Scoutmob deal for a free beer at SOVA is as good as it gets. Known primarily as a cafe, SOVA serves beer, wine, and cocktails as well, and they’re looking to give some beers away.  Why would you pass up that chance?

Happy Monday everyone. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I had a great birthday weekend, thanks for asking. Let’s get back into it. We have a few deals, but unfortunately they have some issues.

Must Buy: I love Chinese food. I especially love discounted good Chinese food. Today’s Google Offer of $15 for $30 at Fusion Grill definitely is discounted, and by the looks of it pretty good. You’re going to get a lot of food for your money here, which is what you want.

Fifty-Fifty: Today’s LivingSocial to Teak Wood (1323 14th St., NW) falls under the classic category of good restaurant, weak savings.

Only one real deal for you to end the week.

Fifty-Fifty: Living Social is offering up $20 for $45 dollars of food to DC eatery, Tuscana West.  Tuscana West is one of a number of upscale Italian restaurants in downtown DC, and today’s livingsocial deal can be enough for two entrees, depending on what you order.  Any more than that, though, and you’ll be going over your limit. Planning a nice dinner downtown, want a few dollars off, and don’t care about ordering wine? Grab this.  Other than that, probably not worth it.

Cafe Carvy: Clean Shaven

There is a man.  He is behind a counter.  The counter resides at the back of the commercial space at 1020 19th Street NW.  He holds in his hand a blade.  He carves.  Day after day, facing down a large turkey breast and sides of roast beef and ham, he carves.

Located on 19th between K and L, Cafe Carvy is a new sandwich spot serving out their wares during the work day to the suited denizens of the downtown DC business establishment.  They have a relatively small menu but their focus is on their handcarved meats.

Happy Thursday. We’re one day from August 3, which is a pretty special day (it’s my birthday). So hopefully we’ll have some great deals tomorrow. Today? Well let’s take a look at today’s deals:

Must Buy: One of the hidden gems of Georgetown is Wisey’s (1440 Wisconsin Ave., NW). They make a pretty solid sandwich/salad at a decent price. So that makes today’s Scoutmob a no-brainer. Only a $5 max discount, but the prices are pretty reasonable. Try out a smootie or a shake while you’re there.
